Adecco facilitates cross-border employment in the hospitality business


Common quality standards create international career opportunities

Diverging employment standards in hotels, restaurants and the catering industry across Europe are often stumbling blocks to working abroad. Adecco SA, the worldwide leader in human resource services, today announced the implementation of a certification process that aims to set common standards across Europe for working in hospitality. These standards will ensure that job candidates applying to Adecco will have their skills, knowledge and experience tested using common criteria across Europe. The testing process covers, for example, communication and foreign language skills and knowledge of dress codes, together with the food, dishes and beverages of specific countries, as well as their customs and conventions.
 
The introduction of standard requirements for jobs in hospitality and the application of the same criteria in testing the aptitude of applicants across Europe is set to facilitate the placement of candidates across borders. A Spanish barkeeper who wants to work abroad can go to an Adecco branch in Spain and - once he is certified - be offered a job that matches his profile in the UK. In the UK he can turn to the Adecco network again and move on to a position in Italy.
 
"International hospitality certification is a major step forward in setting standards that will greatly facilitate the process of gaining work experience in various countries and open up international career opportunities", said Sergio Picarelli, Chief Operating Officer and President of the Adecco Staffing Division.
 
The certification process will also ensure that employers who hire personnel through Adecco will find the same level of quality in all countries taking part in the program. Adecco will offer certification through branches specialising in hospitality jobs; there, applicants will be counselled by consultants with a proven hospitality background, who understand their needs and can match their skills to appropriate job offers.
 
In its initial phase, the certification process will be implemented across the Adecco network in the UK, Ireland, Belgium, Austria, Portugal, Luxembourg, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, Norway and Spain. Germany and Poland will follow shortly.
